Making the Beechgrove Garden flow...

Hilary Greensill, Head Gardener at the Beechgrove Garden, approached Filpumps in 2007 for help as "the once crashing waterfall is now just a trickle".

The Beechgrove Garden is a three acre garden situated in Aberdeen, Scotland, which features in the television programme of the same name. In its 11 years at this site, the gardeners have created 2 ponds, a stream, a waterfall and a bog garden.

Ken Gordon of Filpumps appeared on the show and surmised that in order to create a waterfall reminiscent of a mountain stream the best type of pump would be an industrial drainage pump as this could give a flow rate of 4-5 times that of an average water pond pump.

The hoses were replaced with a polyethylene pipe to reduce friction and therefore improve the speed of the water passing through the pipe, which affects the lift/head given by the pump. This in itself dramatically improved the performance.

A filtration system was suggested which comprised a four-step filtering process which feeds directly from the pump and flows directly into the top of the waterfall. This system puts very little extra friction onto the pump.
